| La Fargassa is situated in the
east Pyrenean mountains, 15 minutes from
the nearest town (Amélie-les-Bains), 50 minutes from the Mediterranean sea
(Collioure, Argelès) and 3 kms. from the Spanish border.

The farm has 260 hectares of land and 1 km. of river. The scenery around is stunning, the road up our valley offers breath taking views over the Mondony gorge. We are surrounded by forests of sweet chestnut, evergreen oak and beech. The changes of height and aspect give a wide diversity of plant and wildlife, a paradise for all lovers of nature.

The long distance coast to coast footpath (GR 10) crosses our land and ancient paved mule tracks lead to neighbouring villages, abandoned farmhouses, solitary chapels and even across the border to Spain, where one can taste the Catalan cuisine. |
La Fargassa means forge in Catalan and tools and farm equipment were made here. Iron ore was brought from the Canigou mountain and wood from the surrounding forests. Later on the building was used as a farm and the hill sides were terraced. The farm was abandoned in the thirties and when we bought it, eight years ago, nature had repossessed the house and the farmland had become forest. Now, a large part of the house is renovated and with the help of our team of donkeys we have cleared many of the terraces.

We have a mixed organic farm with vegetables, fruit, orchards of plum, cherry, pear and appletrees, strawberry, blackberry and raspberry fields, hay, chickens, donkeys and horses.

In addition we run a small scale camp site. You can be out in the mountains walking, cycling, bird watching, wild boar spotting or spend your time sitting by the river.

Your children will be with the animals or paddling, swimming, jumping in the river, scrambling down the water falls, building dams or constructing tree houses. So if you would like a holiday away from the crowds, come and listen to the owls by the campfire and share our corner of the Pyrenees. |
